In order to reduce wind blown sand getting onto Oystermouth Road and to create a new sand dune system, in 2016 over 725m of chestnut fencing was installed on the beach near the Civic centre.
As sand is blown through the fence the wind slows down, the sand is deposited on the ground and a sand dune forms. Marram grass and other sand loving plants then colonise the dune (helped with extra planting) and they stabilise the dune and trap additional sand. Just by looking at the sheer size of this new dune system demonstrates how successful it is. Without the fencing the sand would have blown onto the road instead. It has been so effective that additional fencing has been added to increase the size of the dune.
